Design competition developed within the Open Atelier project, in the framework of the European Commission’s Creative Europe Programme (2022-25)

The Competition, developed by the interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral network of four European House Museums - Open Atelier -, aims to probe the role of Cultural Heritage as a catalyst for the achievement of the social, economic, and environmental tasks blueprinted by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the development of new interpretations and uses of the collections of the the four museums – Einar Jónsson Museum (Iceland), Plečnik House at Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Millesgården (Sweden) and Art Museums of Skagen (Denmark).
This digital initiative invites all creative talents to explore the above assets in light of their possible connection or involvement in achieving one or more SDGs. The proposals, in the form of visual content, that will be collected are intended to highlight the powerful connection between cultural heritage and people, foster positive changes, and support the building of a sustainable, fair, prosperous, and peaceful future.

Anyone can apply to the call, free of charge, and it would be great if the Lisbon School of Architecture students could apply.

Participants are asked to:

  • register on www.openatelier.eu/competition to be assigned a museum collection to work on
  • chose one or more images from the given museum’s collections
  • elaborate a visual statement (in the form of an image or a video) proposing a new interpretation of the museum’s heritage in connection with the SDGs
  • edit a claim (not longer than 50 words) to highlight the proposal’s meaning and message

The competition's was launched on the 6th of February, and the deadline for the submission is on the 6th of May 2024.
The results will be communicated at the end of June, and the award ceremony will take place in the Venice Biennale premises on 12 September 2024.

The author of the winning proposal for each museum will be awarded an invitation to the public event organized within the Open Atelier Project at the Venice Biennale that will take place between the 9th and 13th of September 2024, and his/her travel and accommodation costs in Venice will be covered.
