INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM "CONSTRUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY IMAGINARIES: SPACES, TIMES AND CULTURES" (3rd edition)
27th & 28th February 2023

Held at the CIUL Centre for Urban Infomation, LIsbon City Council, under the initiative of the CIUAD – Lisbon School of Architecture, University of Lisbon (coordination João Mascarenhas Mateus) and with the support of the interdisciplinary and inter-university research group of the Andalusian Regional Government HUM870, based at the University of Granada (coordinated by Francisco Salvador Ventura) - the aim of this meeting is to reflect on the construction of imaginaries in the contemporary world. After two virtual meetings motivated by the recent pandemic situation, this third edition will be held in person in the city of Lisbon, with researchers from 12 universities in 6 countries: Portugal (Lisboa and Nova de Lisboa), Spain (Granada, Malaga, Cadiz, Barcelona and Complutense de Madrid), France (Paris-Cité and Institute Catholique de Paris), Argentina (Buenos Aires), Venezuela (Zulia) and Hungary (Eötvös Loránd in Budapest).

Symbols, myths, or concepts that conform our contemporary imaginaries, as one prefers to call them, have been forged in the most recent decades and are in constant dialogue with the different contexts in which they are continuously projected. What is meant here is a broad, largely universal, common substratum, a kind of common heritage, which is usually approached from partial fields of knowledge. For this reason, this symposium will present different approaches to such imaginary realities by specialists from different backgrounds, including architects, historians, art historians, archaeologists, sociologists, philologists, journalists, anthropologists, among others. The exchanges and debates that will take place during these two days will make an important contribution to a better understanding of these general themes and specific aspects that form part of the referential system of our time, or in other words, that shape our worldview.
