Workshop ReS+Sign: Ermida do Santo Cristo

The Re+Sign Workshop consists of reinterpreting the meaning of the architectural site and piece through semiotic research, design exploration, and urban-artistic-architectural representations of the urban-architectural space of the Ermida do Santo Cristo, located at Rua de Alcolena, No. 2, in Belém, Lisbon.

This Manueline Chapel, dating from the early 16th century, was once part of the enclosure of the Jerónimos Monastery. It was rediscovered in the 1950s and shortly thereafter classified as a Property of Public Interest. Currently, the chapel is dedicated to Orthodox Christian worship, hosting cultural and religious activities for the local Serbian community.

The ReSign workshop holds strategic relevance by positioning the Ermida do Santo Cristo not merely as a historical monument, but as a living urban palimpsest. By focusing on the semiotic research and Architecture of Emptiness, the workshop empowers participants to read the invisible—the absences and transitions of worship and use—transforming the practice of conservation and design into a form of artistic and critical representation that preserves the deep memory of the site.
