Talk abstract:

The Palestinian ‘right of return’ to their homes is a legally recognized right since December of 1948. More importantly, it is a physical right that all Palestinians have been working towards achieving while enduring what is now a 77 year occupation of their homeland and a forced displacement into refugee camps in other lands. This talk will focus on the intersection of the legal and physical aspect of the Palestinian ‘right of return’ through a historical understanding of the Palestine refugee camp, alongside its contemporary conditions in creating and maintaining a spatial resistance to forced displacement. From the onset, the Palestine camp has been one of resistance before it was one of refuge, which is why they have been places of destruction even outside Palestine. Furthermore, the Palestine shelter in the Palestine refugee camp is unique within the refugee history and discourse as it was not designed for resettling and rebuilding lives in a new place, but as a place from which to consolidate a movement for return. While many divisions make any discussion about this topic tense and divisive, it remains the role of academics to examine the realities on the ground. Inquiries into the role of architecture and humanitarian agencies in both building up and concealing narratives of violence will be illustrated.
