Synopsis
Hans Scharoun conceived architecture from the perspective of its inner space like few other architects, and many of his buildings possess an almost iconic significance. In 2022, was the 50th anniversary of Hans Scharoun's death, and in 2023 was celebrated his 130th birthday. This exhibition is dedicated to these two occasions.
As part of the "Research Field" format, students from the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University were dedicated themselves to Scharoun's highly complex interior compositions using the examples shown in this exhibition. During the pandemic, small groups of 2-3 students and a lecturer, documented seven buildings, explored its content, and several excursions, allowed the students to engage in intensive research on-site. The course was concluded with the construction of seven birchwood section models. For its realization, model-relevant aspects that were not apparent from the plans were documented and measured on-site in campaigns lasting several days, in addition to the existing plans.

Synopsis
The exhibition Files in Dialogue presents a selection of sixteen architects whose collections are part of the arch/ves – Archive of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of FA.ULisboa, showcasing the typological, programmatic, and authorial richness of one of the largest architectural archives in Portugal. Featuring figures such as Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, Fernão Simões de Carvalho, Francisco Conceição Silva, João António de Aguiar, João Favila de Menezes, João Paciência, João Simões, José Veloso, Manuel Coutinho Carvalho e Raul Tojal Manuel Vicente, Miguel Câncio Martins, Pancho Guedes, Pedro Maurício Borges, Raul Lino and Tiago Mota Saraiva, the exhibition offers a critical journey through the plurality of Portuguese architectural practices from the 20th century to the present.
Conceiving the archive as both a historical reading device and a platform for critical production, Files in Dialogue highlights the formal, conceptual, and contextual diversity of the holdings, demonstrating how each archival fund is also a space of design and disciplinary reinvention. In alignment with the curatorial principles of arch/ves – preservation, valorization, and accessibility – the exhibition asserts itself as a curatorial essay on Portuguese architectural memory and on the active role of archives in shaping a plural, living, and socially engaged architectural culture.
